Majority of elements are metals.Metals occur in the free state as the metal it self or as compounds in combination with other elements.Metals such as gold & silver occur as the free metal,while metals such as iron,aluminium,magnesium,sodium often occur as compounds.

Being good conductors of electricity.
Have a high density and high melting points.
Chemical properties
Most metals form positive ions.
Most metals combine with oxygen to form basic oxides.These oxides dissolve in water to form bases.
