Chemical Properties
- Magnesium burns with a bright flame when heated strongly to produce magnesium oxide.
2Mg(s) + O2(g) -------->2MgO(s)
- Magnesium does not react with cold water,but heated magnesium will react withstea to produce magnesium oxide and hydrogen gas.
Mg(s) + H2O(g)
----------> MgO(s) +H2(g)
- Mgnesium reacts rapidly with dilute acids producing the magnesium salt and hydrogen.
Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) -------à MgCl 2 (aq)
+ H2 (g)
Uses Of Magnesium
- Making fertilizers
- Making pharmaceutical drugs such as Milk of Magnesia
- Making firewotks in the firework industry.
- As an anti-corrosive material
- Making alloys
